Involution, the process of involving or complicating, or the state of being involved or complicated, best describes the increasingly competitive circumstances in China’s academic and societal settings nowadays. In the face of a highly “revolutionalized” society, parents fear that one day they and their kids will slip down the social scale. They use their children to satisfy their ever-increasing insecurity, foisting their anxieties onto their kids. As a result, parents protect, interfere with, and control their children, framing them under the name of love. And many turn to self-harming to escape from such unbearable pressure.
